The booth recovers powder, it does not only contain it

A powder booth does more than keep the workshop clean; it recovers a large share of the material. Our cartridge filters run at 99.9%+ efficiency and powder recovery is 95% and above. That figure is a direct material cost: powder that is not recovered goes to waste and is bought again every shift. Recovered powder is sieved and reused. Within a few years, the difference between a booth with recovery and a setup without exceeds the price of the booth itself.

Air velocity: a narrow band between two mistakes

Air velocity inside the booth is held between 0.5 and 0.8 m/s, and that band is not arbitrary. Too low and powder escapes the booth; the workshop gets dirty and a safety issue follows. Too high and powder is extracted before it reaches the part; consumption rises and the film thins. The correct range means both a clean workplace and low waste. Fan and duct layout are calculated to hold that velocity at every point in the booth.

Gun count and line speed

The booth is manufactured for 2 to 12 guns. Gun count is not chosen arbitrarily: part surface area, target film thickness and the intended line speed are calculated together. Too few guns slow the line; too many mean unnecessary investment and excess powder consumption. The body can be specified in stainless or galvanised steel; a stainless body makes cleaning and colour change easier.

Filter cleaning and certification

Cleaning is automatic, by pulse-jet: compressed air pulses shake powder off the cartridges and back into recovery. Operators do not stop the line to remove filters, which affects both downtime and filter life directly. Booths are manufactured under CE and ATEX. Routine maintenance means watching filter differential pressure and replacing cartridges when due.

Three questions not to skip when choosing a booth

First: how many times a day do you change colour? With frequent changes, cleaning time is a direct loss of capacity. Second: what is the largest surface area of the part? Gun count and booth size follow from that. Third: will you reuse recovered powder? If so, the sieving arrangement is planned from the start. The answers to these three decide which of two booths in the same price band actually suits you.
